This painting is a depiction of a scene that, in Venezuela, would instill positivity in their lives during a dark time of extreme violence and suffering. Through research of current photos of Caracas, many buildings are deteriorating with lack of maintenance and simple care. I wanted to contrast the dark structures with the colorful birds, creating a sentiment of hope and happiness while being surrounded by despair and darkness. In my country’s culture, the birds shown in Free Birds, Sad City hold a special place in the peoples’ heart. Last year, I was talking with family members that are still in Caracas, they described the interactions they had with some beautiful, intelligent birds with vibrant colors called “Guacamayas”. These birds often visit their windows and balconies of their apartment. The interaction with the birds changed their phycological perspective about each day, providing hope and positive aspects – a natural therapy. Just providing a bit of food and some interaction with the bird gave a few moments of happiness in the midst of a seemingly hopeless situation.
